Fulton County Humane Society: An Independent Nonprofit

It’s a common misconception that Fulton County Humane Society (FCHS) is part of our local government or affiliated with national organizations like the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). However, FCHS is a completely independent nonprofit organization.

We do not receive any government funding—local, state, or federal. Instead, we rely entirely on the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our volunteers. This independence allows us to focus on local needs, working directly with our community to rescue, care for, and find loving homes for animals in distress.

At FCHS, we provide food, vaccines, medical care, and socialization to ensure every rescued animal has the best chance at a happy, healthy life. Your support makes it all possible—thank you for helping us save lives!

Our Commitment to Animal Welfare

At Fulton County Humane Society (FCHS), animals are never euthanized due to space or length of stay. Every animal in our care has a home with us until they are placed through our adoption program.

As a closed-admission shelter, we take in only the animals we can responsibly care for. As a small, underfunded rural shelter, we rely on limited volunteer staff—but that doesn’t stop us from making a big impact in our community and beyond.

While we are committed to giving every animal the best possible chance at life, there are rare instances when humane euthanasia is necessary—either to prevent suffering from untreatable illness or to ensure the safety of people and other animals. These decisions are never made lightly and are always in the best interest of the animal.

We take pride in the work we do every day. In 2023, FCHS achieved a placement rate of over 90% and was recognized by Best Friends Network for our lifesaving efforts.

Since 1981, we have been rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in Fulton County and surrounding areas. We also focus on community education, pet assistance programs, and responsible pet ownership. As part of our commitment to reducing pet overpopulation, we partner with Humane Ohio to provide low-cost spay/neuter transport to Toledo, Ohio, every month.

Your support makes this lifesaving work possible—thank you for being a part of our mission!

FCHS: A Place of Hope and Healing

At Fulton County Humane Society, our shelter is more than just a temporary stop—it’s a place filled with love, care, and second chances.

While the idea of an animal waiting for a forever home can be heartbreaking, our dedicated volunteers and staff work tirelessly to ensure every dog and cat feels safe, valued, and loved. Many of our animals have endured hardship, but we provide the medical care, comfort, and enrichment they need to heal and thrive. Whether playing, snuggling, or simply offering a kind touch, we make sure every pet in our care knows they matter.

You can be part of this life-changing work! Support FCHS by volunteering, fostering, or making a donation to help us continue providing love and care to animals in need. 💙🐾
